On Thursday, 18 th March, Song Song proudly invites you to the opening of JUST WHITE PAINT pastfiction, the first solo exhibition of art works by Christian Stock in Vienna, the artist’s home city.
           
  As Austrian artist Christian Stock’s (b. 1961) first large scale solo exhibition in Vienna JUST WHITE PAINT pastfiction, represents the most definitive exposition to date on the controversial ‘cube’ paintings for which the artist is best known. 
           
  The cube paintings, in which five to ten years of daily painting on a single canvas accumulate to bring a work’s depth to equal it’s height and width, have been said to be many things: the expression of a penetrating understanding of painting since Malevich, and an unhealthy obsession with Black Square; a waste of time, and a profound meditation on being in time; the perfect and complete articulation of an entirely original moral economy, or the work of a self-inflicted Sisyphus damned by his design to push a boulder of his own stubborn creation, or even the work of a first class wit, a dandy, a joker of the lightest, most agile freedom imaginable.

  Whatever one decides for oneself, one cannot but be intrigued, even disturbed, by the project of the cubes as a whole.  And at Song Song, these along with other of Stock’s related artworks are presented in a constellation of a breadth and scope which, while by no means exhaustive of the artist’s surprisingly diverse and varied oeuvre, commands all the attention deserved by an exceedingly interesting, problematic, relevant artist in the top of his form.
